Product Description

Insurance-Approved Security in a Traditional Finish

Union Lock AB 362 is a high-security mortice sashlock designed for exterior wooden doors where insurance compliance and reliable protection are essential. The “AB” denotes the Antique Brass finish, a warm, aged metallic tone that complements traditional and period properties. The “362” refers to BS3621, the British Standard for thief-resistant locks, which is the benchmark required by most home insurance policies in the UK.

Union is one of the most trusted names in British lock manufacturing, with a heritage spanning over 175 years. This Union Lock AB 362 combines that legacy of engineering excellence with a classic aesthetic, making it the ideal choice for front doors, back doors, and any exterior door where both security and style matter.

BS3621 Certified Security

The BS3621 standard is not a marketing claim. It is a rigorous testing regime that locks must pass to achieve certification. The Union Lock AB 362 meets this standard, meaning it has been tested against drilling attacks, picking attempts, sawing attacks, force attacks, and bump attacks. Most UK home insurance policies require BS3621 locks on exterior doors, ensuring you remain compliant and protected.

What Does “5-Lever” Mean? The Union Lock AB 362 is a 5-lever mortice lock. Inside the lock case, five independent levers must all be lifted to the correct height by the key for the lock to turn. This creates over 1,000 possible key combinations, making it highly resistant to picking and manipulation.

Antique Brass Finish

The “AB” finish is a hand-finished antique brass that has been chemically aged and lacquered to preserve its warm, vintage appearance. Unlike bright polished brass, Antique Brass offers a subdued, sophisticated tone that suits period properties, traditional cottages, farmhouses, heritage renovations, and any door where modern chrome or nickel would look out of place. The lacquer coating protects against tarnishing.

Complete Kit Contents

The Union Lock AB 362 typically includes one mortice sashlock body with latch bolt and deadbolt, two keys, one faceplate in antique brass finish, one strike plate in antique brass finish, fixing screws, dust socket, and installation instructions. Note: Handles, escutcheons, and cylinders are sold separately unless otherwise specified. This lock requires a separate cylinder for keyed entry.

Installation Guide

Tools Required: Drill with various bits including a 25mm spade bit, chisels, mallet or hammer, screwdriver, tape measure and pencil, and optionally a mortice gauge.

Step 1: Mark the Door – Position the lock at your desired height, typically 900-1000mm from the floor. Mark the center of the keyhole and spindle on both sides.

Step 2: Drill the Keyhole and Spindle Holes – Drill the keyhole typically 25mm through the door. Drill the spindle hole typically 8mm at 90 degrees to the keyhole.

Step 3: Mortice the Lock Case – Mark the outline of the lock case on the door edge. Drill out the bulk using a spade bit, then chisel to the exact depth and shape.

Step 4: Install the Lock Body – Insert the lock into the mortice. The faceplate should sit flush with the door edge. Secure with provided screws.

Step 5: Install the Strike Plate – Close the door and mark the position of the latch bolt and deadbolt on the door frame. Mortice the frame to accept the strike plate and secure with screws.

Step 6: Install Handles and Cylinder – Attach your chosen handles and escutcheons. Insert the cylinder through the lock body and secure according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Step 7: Test the Operation – Test the latch and deadbolt with the door open and closed. Ensure the key turns smoothly and the bolts engage the strike plate without binding.

Maintenance and Care

Lubrication: Apply a dry graphite lubricant to the keyway and bolt mechanism annually. Do not use oil or WD-40, which can attract dust and gum up the mechanism. Cleaning: Wipe the antique brass finish with a soft dry cloth. Do not use brass polish, as it will remove the lacquered antique finish. Key Care: Keep spare keys in a safe place. Inspection: Check the lock annually for signs of wear, loose screws, or sticking bolts.

For insurance-approved security with a classic antique brass finish, the Union Lock AB 362 is the professional choice for exterior wooden doors.
