What Types of Window Fasteners Are Available?

For older-style casement windows, fastener sets function similarly to handles, with a short arm securing into a slot or onto a hook. Wedge fasteners feature a gap in the handle pulled down onto a wedge that fixes the window in place. Cockspur handles have a nose that juts out of the handle side and slots into a catch on the window frame. They do not engage a multi-point locking system. Espagnolette handles engage a spindle that turns various locks in the frame, securing the window with a multi-point locking system and are generally considered more secure. Key-operated fasteners like the Yale Avon offer cylinder lock security, shooting a bolt into the window frame that is not visible from outside.

What Materials Ensure Durability and Security?

Coated carbon steel fasteners are the baseline option, featuring electroplated zinc with clear or yellow passivation, salt spray tested for 240 hours with no corrosion, providing at least 10 years service life. Austenitic stainless steel offers superior corrosion resistance, tested to 1,000 hours with Grade 5 protection, essential for coastal regions, industrial areas, or when 25-year service life is required. Stainless steel 316, known as marine grade, adds molybdenum for superior protection against saltwater and humidity. The Yale Avon fastener features a high-quality pressure die-cast main body with polyester powdercoat finish for excellent durability and corrosion resistance.

How Do I Install a Window Fastener?

The Yale Avon fastener is designed for timber windows with a 17mm backset on the tongue. Screw fixings are not included; you need 8 x 1 CSK Pozi TF WS screws. Select the correct handing (left-hand or right-hand operation). Position the fastener on the window frame. Mark the fixing holes and drill pilot holes. Secure the fastener with appropriate screws. Install the keeper on the window sash. For complete, secure installation, always use the correct fasteners designed for exterior applications.

What Is the Difference Between Left-Hand and Right-Hand Fasteners?

The Yale Avon fastener is available in left-hand operation. Stand inside the room facing the window. If the handle is on the left side when closed, you need a right-hand fastener. If the handle is on the right side when closed, you need a left-hand fastener. Correct handing ensures smooth operation and proper locking mechanism engagement.

What Is Included in the Package?
